David C. Newman

January 10, 1937 — November 28, 2017

David C. Newman, age 80, of Ft. Washington, MD, passed on November 28, 2017. David was born on January 10, 1937, in Rosaryville, MD. He was the third child of seven children born to Alice Harper Newman and William I. Newman, Sr., both deceased. His family called him Cyril. He was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin (Jim) Newman and Lawrence Newman. David grew up in the Upper Marlboro area, attending and graduating from Douglas High School, Class of 1955. He was drafted into the US ARMY on December 1, 1955 and served until his honorable discharge on November 6, 1957. He received the Good Conduct Medal. Shortly after being discharged from the military, David began his illustrious career with the National Park Service in Washington, DC. He started as a Laborer and displayed a great work ethic which helped him earn several promotions during the course of his career. While there, David also met his wife, Leslie J. Venable there and they married on May 4, 1981. In May 2017, they celebrated 36 years of marriage. In 1995, after 31 years of exemplary service, David retired from his position as Chief of Maintenance for Rock Creek Park and from Federal government service. David loved entertaining his family and friends as often as he could. He was an avid cook who loved to BBQ on the open grill. He was well known for cooking the best BBQ ribs and collard greens you could ever taste. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, and baseball. He served for several years on Brandywine ACs baseball team with his brothers. David was a strong personality that would correct a situation that he believed to be wrong by any means necessary. He was considered to be stern and direct. However, even with that, David had a heart of gold because he would help people in need regardless of who they might be. While David will be remembered as the Strong Arm, he leaves to cherish memories of him, his loving wife and caretaker, Leslie J. Newman; his children, Oveta Newman Stroud of Austin, TX; Patrice Ginyard (Michael) of Clinton, MD; Lawanda Jones of Laurel, MD; Darryl Williams of Capitol Heights, MD; and Rhonda Smith (Jerome) of Brandywine, MD; his dear siblings Pastor William “Harp” I. Newman, Jr. (Elnore) of Capitol Heights, MD; Joseph Newman (Rosalie) of Capitol Heights, MD; James “Oscar” Newman (Peggy) of Ft. Washington, MD; Carlene Carson of Largo, MD; his grandchildren Avis Stroud Coleman, Aaron Stroud, Akia Newman, Ayreon Jackson, Ayra Jackson, Michael Prey, Anthony Jones, William James, Donnell Joppy Williams, Darryl Williams, Jr., Danielle Wright, Breonia Barnett and Jerome Smith, Jr.; and a special nephew who served as his caretaker Jason C. Newman; his goddaughter Tiffany N. Green; and a host of other relatives and friends. No repast following the service. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of David C.
