Sadie Mae Lemons

October 30, 1947 — February 7, 2018

Sadie Mae Lemons, of Bowie, MD passed with her family by her side on February 7, 2018, at the age of 70. If you met Sadie, you would never forget her. Charisma and grace were attributes that she showered on every person she met. She greeted everyone with her warm and friendly smile and outgoing personality. Ambitious, full of life and love, Sadie could put anyone at ease with her loving and spiritual words of encouragement. She was a God-fearing woman who loved the Lord. Born on October 30, 1947, in Camden, SC she was the third of thirteen children born to Janie Jones and Johnnie Jones. Sadie was a proud graduate of Jackson High School, Class of 1965. After obtaining her HS Diploma, Sadie moved to the heart of New York City where she lived with her aunt Katherine “Aunt Kat” Brown, and her constant companion and first-cousin, Roseline Brown-Harris. While pursuing her degree at York College, Sadie worked for Saks Fifth Avenue Department Store. After receiving her Associates Degree in Accounting she secured a job at Beekman Downtown Hospital (now Lower Manhattan Hospital), in the Accounts Receivable Department. It was during this period of her life, Sadie met and married Henry Lemons Jr. While married for twenty-nine years they purchased a house in Cambria Heights, Queens; and they raised their three lovely daughters Felicia, Monifa, and Kafi. In 1989 they purchased a home in Columbia SC, giving Sadie the opportunity to be closer to her beloved mother Janie Jones. Sadie furthered her career by working by at the Department of Health Environmental Control (DHEC). There she assisted low-income children with disabilities obtain quality medical attention. She was known by her clients, and her co-workers to be a fierce advocate for poor families. It was her faith and Christian beliefs that fueled this desire to champion for “vulnerable families” in Richland County. Sadie’s greatest joy was worshiping the Lord and attending church. As an active member of both Oak Grove Baptist Church in Elgin, SC and then First Northeast Baptist Church in Columbia, SC she served on the Mass Choir and Hospitality Committee. Sadie also spent her years helping her daughter Monifa care for her beloved firstborn, Jocelyn. She took the role of grandmother to a whole new level. The two were inseparable, even wearing matching outfits! This level of love extended to her community as well. It was not uncommon for Sadie to assist single mothers in need by purchasing school uniforms for their children, along with providing spiritual support. She believed the work of Christians was to “let their light shine before men, that they may see good works, and glorify the Father which is in heaven (Matt 5:16).” In 2011, Sadie moved to Bowie, Maryland with her youngest daughter, Kafi. During this time, she was an active member of Reid Temple AME Church in Glendale, MD. She also became an integral part of the Lake Arbor Social Seniors of Prince George County where she forged special friendships that would last until her final days. This is just a snapshot of Sadie’s life, all who knew her - knew she lived for God’s eternal reward (John 13:1-3). It was on February 7, 2018, Sadie completed her mission on earth and transitioned to her heavenly seat. There she is reunited with family and friends - socializing and dancing. Music, laughter, and love is guaranteed and the food is delicious. She will be missed. Survived by her devoted daughters, Felicia D. Lemons of Brooklyn, NY, Monifa Lemons of Columbia, SC and Kafi S.
