Bruce Edgar Mottern, longtime resident of Clinton, MD, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the age of 90. Bruce was born on November 24, 1927 at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, DC to Juliette (Guillaume) and Hugh Mottern. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Bruce was honored to be part of the Berlin Airlift of 1948 and to receive the Bronze Star upon his return from Vietnam. He retired in 1972 after 26 years of military service. After his retirement, Bruce began his career with the US Capitol Police, working as a police officer for 20 years until his retirement in 1991. On January 3, 1953, Bruce married his love, Josephine Kreszentia Ziegler of Penzing, Germany. They were married for 40 years before Josephine’s death in 1993. Bruce’s first love was his family followed closely by his devotion to his country. He loved the military, golf, baseball (including umpiring college games), big band music, Westerns, Louis L’Amour books and volunteering at Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic on Joint Base Andrews, MD. Bruce found love again after his wife’s passing with Janet L. Sullivan of Mechanicsville, MD. The two became decades-long partners, enjoying season tickets to the Washington Redskins and traveling the world on cruise ships. Bruce was the loving father of Linda A. Heimpel (Ernie) of Waldorf, MD, Bruce H. Mottern (Madlyn) of Knoxville, TN and Mark C. Mottern of Manhattan Beach, CA. He was the devoted grandfather of Bruce F. Mottern, Steven A. Heimpel, Kyle P. Mottern (Sarah), Ryan C. Mottern, Jennifer A. Heimpel, Tyler A. Mottern (Lauren) and Juliette R. Mottern. He was the great-grandfather of Luke A. Mottern and James A. Mottern. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife Josephine, his parents, sisters Betty and Huguette, brother George and grandson Ryan. Family invites friends to St. John the Evangelist Church at 8908 Old Branch Ave. in Clinton, MD on Monday, December 3rd. A viewing will be held at the church at 10am followed by Mass at 11am. Burial will follow immediately at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Bruce Mottern’s name to the military-affiliated organizations Fisher House Foundation (which supports veterans) or the USO (which supports active military).
