Esther “Peggy” Lloyd, 92, of Forestville, MD departed this life on Sunday, September 29, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was born August 14, 1927, in Willmington, NC to the late Arthur Callahan and Mary McFadder. At a young age Peggy’s father died and her Mom remarried Linwood Simmons. Peggy attended Eastern High School and two years at Strayers Business College. While attending college she worked as a secretary at the U.S. Naval Gun Factory at the U.S. Navy Yard, Washington D.C. for 7 years. It was during that time she married her childhood sweetheart, Tom. After the birth of her son Tommy, Peggy went to work for Wilkins Coffee Company as secretary to the vice president. During that time another son, Jimmy was born. While son Tommy was attending Bishop McNamara High School, Peggy took an active part in the Mother’s Club, serving as publicity chairman, Christmas Bazaar chairman and president. In 1971, she was chosen Alumni Mother of the Year and given a lifetime membership in the Mother’s club. She took an active part in scouting serving as den mother for three years. She held the office of secretary to the Lady’s Sodality at Mt. Calvary Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Lady’s Auxiliary. It was on November 1, 1969 that Peggy was hired at Arby’s as the first female counter personnel at Marlow Heights. The job became a real challenge and she was eager to learn what made the “Streeter Team” tick. With the encouragement of her supervisor, she became the first female assistant manager in May of 1970 and in just three short months later became the first female manager at Marlow Heights. She was awarded a “Courtesy is Contagious” award by the Food Service Executives Association of Washington D.C. for her professionalism as a manager. In 1977 she went to work for the U.S. Census Bureau and retired after 20 years of service. Peggy married Thomas S. Lloyd in 1948. Together they celebrated over 63 years of marriage before his passing in October 2011. They are now happily reunited in heaven. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to all that she knew. After she retired, Peggy loved spending time in the kitchen baking sweets with her husband and shopping QVC. She loved Christmas and looked forward to watching Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. Peggy enjoyed every summer vacationing in Ocean City, MD with her family. She loved to “spoil” and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peggy is survived by her children Thomas (Terry) and James (Lisa); devoted grandmother of Elizabeth, Jacqueline and Cynthia and six (6) great-grandchildren Joe, Madison, Julie, Bradley, Allie, and Ashlynn; and a grand dog Copper. She is also survived by one brother, Robert (Kyung). Along with her parents, Peggy is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas S. Lloyd and siblings, Tom, Carol, Bud, and Eddie. Peggy was also blessed to have amazing caregivers, Isha, Madiona, Agnes, Angel, and Sylvia, taking care of her throughout her illness. https://heartlandhospicefund.org/ To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Esther "Peggy" Lloyd please visit our Sympathy Store.
