George McCree JR

George McCree, Jr. was born in Pachuta, MS on April 11, 1930. He was the ninth in a family of nine children born to the late George McCree, Sr. and Rosetta (Rosie) Jordan McCree. Eight siblings preceded him in death: Anna Belle Moss, Mary Julia Dear, Alberta John, Cornell McCree, Ouida Strickland, Ella Mae McCree, and Mattie Price. Junior, as he was affectionately called, went to elementary school in Clark County, MS and graduated from Rowan High School in Hattiesburg, MS. Soon after graduating, he joined the United States Air Force and began what would become a 20-year career in which he served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, lived in several countries and served his country valiantly. Along the way, he received numerous honors and meritorious awards. He was honorably discharged in 1970. Following his career in the military, he worked for a brief period for the U.S. Postal Service before joining the U.S. Capitol Police in 1972. For 20 years, he once again found himself serving his country, ensuring the safety and protection of the United States Congress and the congressional community. Before his final retirement in 2005, he worked at the Department of Justice as a security contractor. During his time in the military, while stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, MD, he met his future wife, Dora Mae Gardner in 1958, in Waldorf, MD. After dating for several years, on February 12, 1962, they married in Arlington, VA and began a 57-year marriage filled with joy and loving memories. The union of their marriage brought forth the blessing of two children, Sabrina and George Terrell. George was affectionately known by many names. His wife called him “Cree,” many family members called him “Junior” and colleagues and friends knew him as “Mac,” “Sugarfoot,” and “Greyhound.” George is fondly remembered as a man dedicated to his family. He loved and enjoyed spending time with them whenever he could. He always supported, guided and encouraged them to get educated, to work hard and to be good citizens. One of his final achievements was gathering his family from across the country in Washington, DC for a family reunion in June 2019. Although his health was failing, he was adamant about making this happen and the joy of having his family around him was enchanting and made him glow with happiness. On September 7, 2019, the sun set on George’s life at the Madrin Hospice Facility in Harwood, MD. During his earthly journey, he touched many lives and will be missed tremendously. He is survived by his wife, Dora; three children: Glynnis Peyton, Sabrina McCree Dormeville (Rene) and George Terrell McCree (Rhonda); and seven grandchildren: Titus Peyton, Jr., Vanessa Gross, Tesfahun Dormeville, Mihiret Dormeville, Ediliwat Dormeville, Kendall McCree and Cameron McCree as well as a host of nieces, nephews and loving family members.
