J. Carol Gardner

June 9, 1931 — September 30, 2018

J. Carol Gardner, better known as Carol because she did not like her first name, was born in Shanghai China to British parents, where her father worked for the Shanghai Municipal Council as Deputy Treasurer. A day after Pearl Harbor the Japanese occupied Shanghai and eventually put them into a civilian camp where they became a prisoners of war for over 2 years. After the war in 1945 the family moved to Victoria, British Columbia. Shortly after, Carol’s father received a job with The International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. While she stayed back to finish high school, the rest of the family moved to Annandale, VA. where Carol would eventually join them in 1949. After attending Strayer University she acquired a secretarial job at the World Bank. It was here that she met her future husband Bob, but she had the travel itch and went to Australia and New Zealand for a couple of years and returned in 1959. Carol and Bob married in January 1960 and proceeded to start their family. They had 3 children, Matthew, Lynsay, and Andrew. It was in September of 1963 that they moved their family to Fort Washington, MD. February 2001 Bob passed away. She then lost Matt in May 2010, Lynsay in July 2010 and daughter-in-law Vicki in October 2013. She is survived by her son Andrew, daughter-in-law Amy, son-in-law Richard Young, and 5 grandsons, Robert, Ryan, Chase, Austin and Adam. She passed away suddenly on Sunday September 30th 2018 of a cerebral hemorrhage so she did not suffer which is a great comfort to all of us. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of J.
