Kathryn M. Thorne

May 13, 1941 — February 1, 2019

Kathryn Earle Mason Thorne, age 77, of Dunkirk, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2019, surrounded by her family. Born at Garfield Hospital in Washington, DC, on May 13, 1941, she is survived by her loving husband Wayne Smith Thorne of Dunkirk, MD, their daughters Karen Dianne Boyd (Douglas) of Lothian, MD, and Sharon Kaye Thorne-Sulima (James Sulima) of Churchton, MD, and two grandsons Nicholas Sebastian Boyd and Cameron Preston Boyd of Lothian, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents Percy Preston Mason and Elsie Lou Haught Mason of Suitland, MD, and her brother Wayne Lee Mason, Sr. of Stevensville, MD. She graduated from Suitland High School in 1959, and worked at Masters Department Store in Washington, DC, until she married Wayne on August 31, 1959, at Mt. Harmony UMC in Calvert County, and they started a family. She was a substitute teacher in Prince George’s County for several years, then became a demographic surveys statistical assistant with the US Census Bureau. After almost twenty years, she retired in 1991 to become a full-time grandmother. She was a member of Job’s Daughters Chapter 12 Seat Pleasant, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Martha Washington Chapter DC Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to volunteer her time and talents. She served with Help By Phone at District Heights Presbyterian Church, as a room mother at North Forestville Elementary, leader for her Daughters’ Girl Scout troops, treasurer of the Suitland High School Band Boosters, Pom Pom Mother for Suitland’s squad, Treasurer of the Bay Country Estates Homeowners’ Association, member of the Tracey’s Elementary School PTA, and designer of several of Tracey’s yearbooks. She loved homemaking, reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, feeding wildlife, gardening, caring for any stray cats who wandered by, and being with her family. An avid seamstress, she and her daughters had a part-time craft business, SKrafts, for over fifteen years. She loved to travel with her family, and they created many memories on their several cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska, an Australian adventure, touring America and yearly trips to Ocean City and the Outer Banks. A lifelong sufferer of muscular dystrophy, she never complained nor let the disability set limitations on her life. She touched many lives in her over seventy-seven years, and she leaves behind numerous friends.
