Kenneth J. Leggett

December 6, 1929 — May 4, 2019

Kenneth John Leggett, 89, of Camp Springs, MD passed away May 4 in Clinton, MD from kidney disease complications. He was born in 1929 in Manchester, CT to John and Margaret Leggett, who had both emigrated from Ireland to Connecticut. They moved to Washington, D.C. during the Great Depression. Mr. Leggett graduated from Anacostia High School in 1948. He served as a member of the National Guard of the District of Columbia from 1948-50. Mr. Leggett then joined the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper 1950-1953. He was employed by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company from 1954 to 1978 and attended Southeastern University at night. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1958. He then joined the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as an accountant from 1979 until his retirement in 1995. Mr. Leggett was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Association in Washington, D.C. and was active until recent years. He was a member of American Legion Post #259 in Clinton, MD, had served as a volunteer fireman with the Silver Hill Fire Department and made his mark in several area duckpin bowling leagues in his younger years. He was a long-time devoted member of First Baptist Church in Camp Springs, MD, where he served as trustee and usher. Mr. Leggett’s generosity was a hallmark of his life. He never met a charity that didn’t merit his interest. He loved chatting and joking with waitresses at his favorite restaurants. His beverage of choice was black coffee, which he consumed morning, noon and night. In 1954, he married Remona Osborne. They were married 25 years until her death in 1980. In 1981, he married Rita Babb. They were married 30 years until her passing in 2012. He is survived by one son, Keith James Leggett of Sunset Beach, NC, daughters by marriage Victoria Nisbet and Teresa Ridgeway of Colonial Beach VA, sister-in-law Teresa Osborne of Duluth, GA, niece Carol Hurley of Huntingtown, MD , nephew Ronnie Leggett of Annapolis, MD, niece Kris Bowman, Landsdowne, PA, his grandson’s widow Rosa Magali (Maggie) Morales of Camp Springs, MD, and several cousins, grandchildren, grandnephews and grandnieces. He was predeceased by his younger brother Walter in 1982 and daughter by marriage Debbie Babb in 1998. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to First Baptist Church of Camp Springs, MD or to the National Kidney Foundation.
