Louise Brown

January 5, 1939 — July 16, 2021

Louise Dorsey Brown died unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on July 16, 2021. Happy from now on are those who die in the Lord. Louise was born on January 5, 1939 in Augusta, (Harlem) Georgia to JB and Carrie Dorsey and was raised with her sisters Mary, Rhena, Carrie, Vivian, and brothers JB, and Sam. Louise graduated from high school in Harlem and continued her education at Paine College where she earned her B.A. She earned her master’s degree from Syracuse University and became a special education teacher for the public school system. Louise was at the forefront of the education of children with special needs, particularly those with challenging behavior. She received Teacher of the Year awards several times. Her unending belief in the education of all children has been a cause for which she has been a champion and is a legacy that she leaves for the next generation of educators. Louise’s greatest joy was her family and friends, and by extension, their pets. In 1963 she married her husband John, whom she fondly called Mike (or Husband,) and they raised four wonderful children, Ronald, Jan, John and Jay. Louise supported Mike as he served our country for over 33 years and rose to the rank of Major General in the United States Army. Living in numerous military posts in the United States and abroad, she made a welcoming home for him and the children, and any number of visitors of family and friends. Because of her love and passion for education and teaching, Louise exposed her children to rich history, heritage, culture, education, art, and other opportunities wherever they lived or traveled. This family tradition continues through the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Upon Mike’s retirement from the U.S. Army, Louise and family settled into their home in Maryland. They split their time between Maryland and their condo in Pompano Beach, Florida, where Louise could see “her ocean” every morning from her bed. Ever the consummate hosts, Louise and Mike welcomed and entertained family and friends in both of their homes. Her generosity, kindness and compassion for all were greatly admired and reciprocated by everyone she knew. “When are you coming to see us?” was one of her favorite questions. Louise is survived by her loving husband, Mike; her children and their spouses Ronald Brown (Denise), Jan Brown (Lauren), John Brown Jr. (Andresa), and Jay Brown, her grandchildren Raven Brown, Aldez Lloyd (Rebecca), Bianca Brown, John Brown III, Jazaria Brown, and Joel Brown, eight great grandchildren, her sisters Rhena Dorsey and Mary Dorsey, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family, as well as friends spread throughout the world. Louise is already missed beyond words and her memory will live on in our hearts forever.
