Mary Jane Deville Hooper

August 27, 1941 — December 10, 2021

On Friday, December 10, 2021, God gently touched His faithful servant Mary Jane Hooper, and invited her to be eternally joined with her mother Mary Alice Parham, Charles A. Parham (stepfather), and her brother Joseph DeVille. Mary or “Mary Jane” as she was affectionately known was born on August 27, 1941. She began her education at Saint Mary of the Assumption Elementary School and graduated from Frederick Douglass Junior-High School. She received a BA Degree in Elementary Education from the University of the District of Columbia. She worked and retired from the U.S. Department of Education in 1996 after 37 years of dedicated government service. She married Johnnie Hooper the love of her life on September 12, 1964. From their union they had three children, Cheryl, Leta, and Anton Hooper. She loved attending social functions and celebrating good times with her loved ones. For leisure, she enjoyed traveling and taking care of her flower gardens in her front yard. She was a devout member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was an active member of Saint Mary’s Ladies Auxiliary #21 and a dedicated member of Holy Family Sodality. Mary was a member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. since 1981. She loved her Sorors of Eta Phi Beta. She served as the Eastern Region Director and in many positions in the chapter. She was a member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and served as the Eta Phi Beta National Liaison for NCNW. She lived in the Temple Hills community for over 50 years where she was a dedicated member of the Hillcrest-Marlow Heights Civic Association. She served as the Vice President of the Association and always assisted with various Association events. The family would like to thank the caregivers Erica McCullen, LaTina Whitley, Mary Hill (Mary #2), and Mariama Jollah for their outstanding care of Mary and always being there for her. Mary was an incredible wife, mother, sister, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 57 years Johnnie; her children Cheryl, Leta, and Anton; her sister Cecelia Lanham; 2 special Godchildren, Mary DeVille and Eric Lanham; her nieces and nephews; and host of other loving relatives and friends.
