Raymond Short

September 23, 1926 — July 16, 2019

Raymond L. Short, “Ray”, of Camp Springs MD, died on July 16, 2019 at his residence in Hughesville MD at the age of 92 years. Born in Detroit (Dearborn), Michigan, Ray was the son of Justina J. and Charles C. Short. Ray grew up in Detroit and graduated from High School there. His family moved to NW Washington DC and he enlisted into the US Army in 1945. During his tour of duty, Ray was decorated with the American Campaign Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in December of 1946. After the Army, Ray worked as a brakeman for the railroad. He left there for an opportunity with the Federal Government Printing Office and became a Printing and Procurement Specialist. He worked there for the next 30 years before retiring. Ray met and later married Dolores Schaub on November 29, 1952. They originally settled in Morningside MD before moving in 1970 to Camp Springs MD. There they raised their three children, Raymond, David, and John. Ray was a kind, decent, and honorable man. He was very religious, sociable, outgoing, charitable, and above all else, a great friend, husband and father. Ray served as Usher at the Basilica and St. Philip the Apostle Church. He was both an inspiration and an example of what a devout Catholic with a holy life should be. Ray was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge. Ray was a caregiver and devoted husband. When the growing need of caring for Dolores’ mother presented, he cared for her until her death. He embodied the virtues that most of us strive for on our best days. When Dolores became ill, Ray didn’t hesitate to address the challenges and conditions that were before him. He lovingly cared for her until her death on March 12, 2003. Once Ray befriended two homeless brothers living in the woods who did odd jobs for money and food. Despite everyone’s objections, when one of the brothers broke his leg, Ray took this man into his home, fed him and gave him a safe place to heal until he was strong enough to work again and be on his own. Ray loved sports, especially local home teams. His sons shared many memories of the fun they had attending endless home team games, both at the stadiums as well as watching at home on the television. His sons also remember his lifelong enjoyment of cooking and grilling, card games, cribbage, bowling, shooting pool and dancing. He was truly the life of the party and the last to leave. Ray is survived by his sons, Raymond Short, Jr. (Jill) of Hughesville MD, David Short (Kelly) of Linthicum Heights MD, and John Short (Kelly) of Waldorf MD. Loving grandfather of Jaime Rae Dunbar (Paul), Christopher Ryan Short, Madeline Lorraine Short, Nicholas Raymond Short, Brittany Lynn Short, John Steven Short (Chelsey), Shannon Michele Short, and step-grandfather of Lauren Ziegler, Phillip Parsons, Julia Parsons, Jonathan Parsons, Kristi Parsons, David Parsons, Derek Parsons, Erin Parsons, Andrea Parsons and Devon Parsons.
