Richard (Dick) Harold Phillips, 61 of Accokeek, MD died at home with Hospice care on May 1, 2021, following surgery on March 24, 2021. He was born April 23, 1960 in Hadley Hospital to David and Ruth Phillips and lived all his life in Accokeek. He was the adoring younger bother of David C. Phillips (Cindy) of Glen Elg, MD and older brother of Walter D. Phillips (deceased), Uncle of John D.(Mary Ann), Charles W., Michael S. (Martha), and Kevin J. Phillips and Great-uncle of David S. Phillips, Nephew of Alice P. Loughry, Paula P. Shaner (deceased),Irene Leland (deceased), John Dawson (deceased), Charles Dawson (deceased), Edward Dawson and Frederick Dawson. Dick graduated from Friendly High School and worked at Centers for the Handicapped (CHI, Inc) in Silver Spring, MD for 29 years. He was engaged to Karen Steward, who also worked for CHI, Inc, but tragically died of pancreatic cancer in 1998. Baseball was his favorite sport and he was an avid fan of the Senators, Orioles and NATS. He loved to sing in school choruses and took painting classes at P.G. Community College and Harmony Hall. He had art exhibits at Harmony Hall, Oxon Hill Manor, and Davies UU Church. He was a Boy Scout in Troop 724 and hiked 55 miles on the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park with the Troop in 1970. He enjoyed canoeing on the Shenandoah, Potomac and Patuxent Rivers. Dick lived with a seizure disorder from the age of two, following the two-week measles, which became more severe as he grew older, but did not keep him from having a successful life with family and community support. Brother Walter and then nephew John were health aides for him since 1994. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, P.G. County, 9500 Medical Center Dr., Suite 250, Largo, MD 20774 or Davies Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7400 Temple Hill Rd., Camp Springs, MD 20748.
