Ruth Lohr Hoehl, of Upper Marlboro, MD died on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the age of 86. Born in Washington, DC, the youngest of five children born to William Truman Lohr, Sr. and Elnora "Nora" Wood Lohr. Ruth grew up in the District of Columbus, attending Catholic schools. She met and married Elmer Hawes at a very young age and together they had five children. Elmer died unexpectedly in 1971. Mutual friends played matchmaker for Ruth and George John Hoehl and the stars were aligned. They married and had Christine. Over the next 45 years, the events in their lives took them many places, particularly those that had to do with special needs children. The reasons for empathy for the struggles that these children have, had much to do their own circumstances. Ruth and George had can-do spirits. Both were instrumental working with the Special Olympics in Charles County. Ruth was inspired by the kids who struggled, persevered and triumphed with her support. Ruth was also an advocate for special religious education. Love and laughter was always her philosophy. In 2007, Both Ruth and George attended the Special Olympics World Games in China where their daughter was selected. Christine received a Bronze Medal for competition in Bocce Ball. Ruth was blessed with a large and loving family. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her and gave her peace. She was a devout member for 45 years at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. She was also a member of the ladies Sodality at the church and Queens of Knights with the Knights of Columbus. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she is running the arts and crafts department. Ruth loved to do crafts and decorated for each and every holiday. She also was known to crochet baby blankets for each expectant bundle of love. Beloved wife of George J. Hoehl of Upper Marlboro, MD; devoted mother of Nancy Palmedo of Chesapeake, VA, Patricia “Patty” Hawes of Melbourne, FL, John Hawes of Manassas, VA, Christine Hoehl of Upper Marlboro, MD and the late Joanne Cart and Robert “Bobby” Hawes; predeceased by her siblings, the late Mary Frances Coyle, Regina Irene Bohannon, Charles Edward Lohr and William Truman Lohr Jr.; She is also survived by 6 Grandchildren and 12 Great-Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and family members.
