Velma DeShong

December 14, 1922 — April 7, 2019

Velma Vashti Farrar was born 14 December 1922 to Tempie S. and Everett Farrar (both deceased). She hailed from Carrier Mills, Illinois. She was called to heavenly rest on Sunday, 7 April 2019 in Bowie, Maryland after a long illness. .....Mother, Munner, Mudder...... She married her childhood sweetheart, MSGT James G. DeShong (deceased). Together they travelled all over the world as she furthered her education by the Department of Defense, and learned many more cultures. Mother had a successful career with the Department of Defense for 70 years before retirement. Mother was so unique and wonderful she could never be matched. She was closely involved with her family and directly raised 4 generations. She was truly the “Wind Beneath everyone’s Wings”. Her warmth, compassion and caring was extended beyond the family. She always had that delicious pot of chili ready to go with her cornbread, greens, BarBQ and coffee for everyone. Give her a deck of cards and she would show you miracles with poker, pinochle, spades and many more and would win while she was taking that little nap at the table. She would also get that switch from the closest tree if you were showing out, or her cane. She was a Master Architect and could build anything and did. She built walls, laid tile, carpet, driveways, built furniture and was a master seamstress. If “they” made it, she could make it. Her hairdressing skills were beyond anything today. ( she even bought me my first motorcycle). Mother Has A Degree In Love. Mother had so many loving sides. She loved and provided for her children deeply and loved strangers as well. She was the Suggestion Program Manager for DOD. She could speak 3 languages and was an avid writer and would help you win any case you were disputing in any venue in life. Her energy was limitless and her spirit was genuine. Together, Mother and Daddy raised four children, Sharon Michelle, Crystal TiaJuana, Beatrice Thomasine, and Michael Alexander. In addition to her parents and husband, Mother is preceded in death by her daughters Michelle and Beatrice, sister Ruth, brother Everett Jr.; grandchildren, Tya R., Daniel E., Tony; great granddaughter, Kimari; nephew, Steve; sister-in-law Marilyn; sons-in-law, Cliff, Lawrence and James; brothers-in-law, Bill and Louie, Aunt Bertha, Uncle Lee (Pauline) and so many more. Mother is survived by her children, Crystal and Michael (Lori); grandchildren, Lawrence, Christopher, Monique, Derek(Joni), Thomas (Tyrice), Kristi, Donna; great grandchildren, David, Tya, Maria, Derek, Daniel Jr., Bridgette, Nikko, Thomas Jr., Ciera, Montez, Jasmine, Michael, Patrick and Nicholos; great great grandchildren Antonia, Aliyah, Anothny, Anton Aterrio, Hailey, and Derek Jr.; nieces, Lorna, Nikki, Lisa, Kim, and Jacqueline. Nephews, Billy and Randy; brother Dean, sisters, Ethel, Marion, and Elaine. Mother Remembering you is easy. I do it Everyday Missing you is the heart ache that will never go away I remember when I needed you, you were always there You are my rock, faithful, strong, always in my prayer I joked, you laughed hard and that was the best part There is no doubt, no doubt at all, you loved us from the start Whatever the fear, danger or barrier, you always helped us face We’re thankful you were in our lives, you’ll never be replaced.
