Vernon Gilbert Jacobsen, Sr.

Vernon Gilbert Jacobsen Sr., age 87 of Fort Washington, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021 at his daughter’s residence surrounded by family. Vernon Gilbert Jacobsen Sr. was born April 17, 1934 to Gilbert & Irene (Zamzow) Jacobsen of Clements, Minnesota. He grew up in Clements with five brothers & two sisters; the son of a building contractor and homemaker. He attended school in Clements & graduated from Springfield High School. Following graduation, Vernon enlisted in the United States Navy for four years in the meteorology career field. Vernon married Sheila Archambault in 1956 and to this union two children were born: Susan and Jeffery. He enjoyed serving his country and was honorably discharged in 1957. Upon returning to Clements, he worked for the local electric company as a linesman. In 1962, he received a job offer from the federal Weather Bureau and moved to the D.C. area. On July 5, 1975, Vernon married Gwendolyn Bergman and had two children, Vernon Jr. and Jane. Following retirement from the government (31 years) in 1989, he returned full time to his passion of working outdoors for over 30 years. This included lawn care, tree removal, and raising flowers. He enjoyed watching and attending games for the Washington Football Team and the Washington Nationals. Vernon was always assisting family and neighbors with projects along with raising money for many charities. He will be greatly missed. Vernon Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Gwendolyn; children: Susan (Wayne), Jeffery (Suzie), Vernon Jr., Jane (Jeremy), and Dawn; brothers, sisters, and in-laws: Janice, Evie, Carmen, Marlis, Joann, Bud (Sandee), and Roger; 19 grandchildren: Christina, Shannon, Aaron, Jessica, Colleen, Megan, Nicole, Shannon, Maria, Brandon, Vernon III, Dylan, Eva, Joshua, Christian, Abigail, Rebekah, David, and Jacob; and 14 great grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert (Mary), & Irene, and brothers Loren, Rollie, and Dale. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 p.m. Friday, July 16 at the Lee Funeral Home in Clinton. Funeral Services will follow at 4:00 p.m. Friday, July 16. Burial is being arranged with Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
