Amos Butler

April 13, 1951 — February 21, 2026

Amos Butler, born April 13, 1951, in Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was 74 years old.

Amos was the beloved son of the late Arthur and Lucy (Harrison) Butler. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, establishing a foundation of faith. Like many young men, his journey included moments where he did not always see life the way his parents may have hoped. However, through growth, determination, and life experience, Amos found his way and became a man of strength, character, and purpose—someone his parents were deeply proud of. He carried those lessons with him (sharing with young people all the time, not wanting them to make the same mistakes), and lived the remainder of his life with resilience, compassion, and dignity.

Following his graduation from Ullman High School, Amos answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1970. He served honorably as a Military Police Officer, demonstrating the discipline, responsibility, and commitment that would become hallmarks of his life.

Following his military service, Amos continued his commitment to public service through his career with the federal government. He worked in the travel division at the Department of Defense, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), where he built lasting friendships and was known for his reliability and professionalism. He later retired from federal service, closing a chapter of dedicated work that he took pride in. He valued his career and the relationships he formed with his colleagues.

Amos was a man who truly loved people. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for meaningful conversation. Whether at the grocery store, the gym, or simply out in the community, he would often strike up conversations, especially with young people. He took a genuine interest in their futures, encouraging them to pursue education, meaningful careers, or military service as a path toward stability and opportunity. He was, at heart, a mentor, and he found joy in guiding others.

He was the definition of a gentleman—kind, respectful, and strong-willed, with a presence that could be felt and a voice that was always heard. Amos also possessed a natural charm and was well known as a ladies’ man. He loved hand dancing, spending time on the golf course, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

His greatest demonstration of love and strength came after the passing of his beloved wife, Sheila (Johnston) Butler. Widowed far too soon, Amos devoted himself fully to raising his children, Tamela (Sean) and Larry, as a single father. Through his sacrifice, guidance, and unconditional love, he provided them with a strong foundation that continues to carry them through life. Amos was also the father of Brandon Butler. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remain deeply grateful for his love, sacrifice, and guidance, and are proud of the father he was.

One of Amos’s greatest joys was being a grandfather. He loved and cherished his grandchildren Ashley, Keanu, Sean, Kobe, and Kori. He devoted countless hours to them, spending precious time together and creating memories they will carry with them forever. They brought him immense pride and happiness, and he loved them deeply. They were, without question, his pride and joy. He was also blessed to see his legacy continue through his great-grandchildren, Iverson, Luka, and Trace.

Amos also leaves behind other beloved grandchildren Lisa, Brandon Jr., Anthony, Quinten, Amrei, and Timeo, as well as two additional great- grandchildren, Matteo and Jamari Amos.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Amos was preceded in death by his siblings Arthur Butler, Jr., Willie Butler and Mary Butler (Bob).

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving siblings Dorothy (MacArthur), Thomas (Sharon), Maxine, Daun (Carla), and Richard (Amy); his sister-in- law Barbara Butler; his children; his grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Amos will be remembered for his warmth, his wisdom, his strength, and his ability to make everyone he encountered laugh out loud, feel seen and valued. His legacy lives on in the family he raised, the grandchildren he adored, and the countless lives he touched.

Well done, Dad. Your job here is complete. Rest peacefully.
