Casimir Leo Witucki

May 26, 1928 — April 19, 2015

One of the Last…Casimir “Slug” Witucki, died Sunday, 19 April 2015, at Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home, in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. For those who follow Washington Redskins football and are of a certain age the name Slug Witucki is very familiar. He played behind Sammy Baugh as an offensive lineman and he filled up the field like few before or since. And as big as he was on field he was as big off the field. Always a kind word for everyone – friend or stranger, a round of beer, and a good stogie captured Slug’s generous approach to life. Casimir Leo Witucki was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1928. He played for Indiana University and in 1990 was inducted into the Indiana University Football Hall of Fame.He served in Korea and rose to the rank of Second Lt. in the U.S. Air Force serving from Nov. 51-Sep 53. While in the Air Force football was not very far from his life. He was selected to be a part of the Ashiya Mustangs football team in 1952 and they had a successful record of 8-3. In early 1953 Slug organized and carried out the "first spring training program” in the Air Force bases' football history. Later that same summer Slug designed a fund drive that netted $263 for the 483rd Troop Carrier Wing's athletic fund. In addition to a successful season, the defensive line of the Mustangs was one of the heaviest in the Far East weighing in at almost 1400 pounds. Witucki played for the Washington NFL Team in 1950-1951 and 1953-1956 where he was an offensive guard. He played with Sammy Baugh, who named him to his “All Time Redskins Team.” Witucki stayed involved in the Redskin organization where he served as president of the Redskin Alumni and was a past-president of the Touchdown Club of Washington. He worked for Sylvania for 40 years. He was married for 62 years to the former Betsy Black Witucki and had three children, Glenn Witucki, Bruce Witucki, and Ruth Anne Miller, and five grandchildren. He died after a long illness. In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer's Association; mail to: Alzheimer's Association National Area Chapter, 3701 Pender Drive, Suite 400, Fairfax, VA 23030 To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Casimir Leo Witucki please visit our Sympathy Store.
