Accomplished writer and teacher Dorothy Ann “Dolly” Lewis passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, with her loved ones by her side. She was 76 years old.
Born in Washington, D.C., Dolly was the loving daughter of Teresa and Orville Stanton. She met and married the love of her life, William “Chip” E. Lewis, on August 28, 1971. Their lifelong love of sunshine and travel began on their honeymoon in Atlantic City, New Jersey. An excellent swimmer, Dolly adored the ocean and often ventured out so far that the lifeguards would whistle her back in.
Throughout their life together, Dolly and Chip enjoyed visiting the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., going on cruises, parks, and taking spontaneous day trips. Dolly loved animals and was always on the move—exercising, exploring, or finding the perfect place to shop.
A gifted educator, Dolly taught High School English at Glen Burnie, Old Mill, and Arundel High Schools. She loved both reading and writing, and in addition to her classroom work, she enthusiastically led yearbook and literary magazine groups. She was also known for writing stories for local newspapers. Her students gained far more than academic lessons—Dolly inspired them to do their best, to think deeply, and to believe in themselves. She understood that she was shaping young lives, and she embraced that responsibility with heart.
Dolly excelled at word games—especially Scrabble—and loved music, dancing, and creating beautifully detailed scrapbooks that preserved the many adventures she shared with her family. Above all, her greatest joy in life was her family: her husband, daughter, son-in-law, siblings, and beloved grandchildren.
Her memory will always reflect her joyful spirit, her love for life, and her belief in not taking things too seriously—reminding all who knew her to enjoy every moment.
Dolly is survived by her devoted husband, William Edward Lewis; her loving daughter, Jennifer Lewis Blum, and her husband, Andy; and her cherished grandchildren, Violet, Sadie, and Miles Blum.
