Dr. Robert L. Glass

June 25, 1939 — January 15, 2022

Robert Lee Glass was born June 25, 1939 in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Ivory Glass, Sr. and Mary White Glass. He passed away peacefully at the age of 82 with his family on January 15, 2022 at the home of his beloved daughter and son-in-law in Brandywine, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Glass Ferrell and brother, Ivory Glass, Jr. Robert was affectionately known as "Dr. Bob" or "Bob" by his family, friends and colleagues. Robert graduated from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1958 and then attended Howard University wherein he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1962. After graduation, he elected to serve in the United States Army as a Commissioned Officer, First Lieutenant of the Chemical Corps in 1963 and was honorable discharged in 1969. He began his career as a research scientist with the National Institute of Health (N.I.H.), later transferring to United States Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, MD where he was employed for 25 years. In 1974, he received his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in chemistry from Howard University. For several years, he was an active member with the American Chemical Society. In 1999, he pursued a second career as a professor at Bowie State University teaching general chemistry where he had a tremendous impact on his students. Robert was an inspiration to many and a friend to all. In the late 70's, he became actively involved in the community as a football and basketball coach with the Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club and then became the assistant coach for the Oxon Hill Senior High School girls’ basketball team. He will be remembered for his unwavering generosity, kindness, and willingness to assist everyone he encountered. He was married for many years to Barbara Glass, later divorced, however, remained close friends until his demised. He is survived by two children, Stephanie Glass Hines (Eric) of Brandywine, Md, and son Michael Glass, Sr. (Parris) of Laurel, Md; three grandchildren, Michael Glass, Jr. of Hyattsville, Md, Jaylen Glass of Brandywine, Md and Chais Hines of Brandywine, Md; two nephews, James "Figgs" Ferrell and Christopher Ferrell of Lynchgurg, Va; two nieces, Ivorie Princess Glass and Sheen Glass of Lynchburg, Va; two brother-in-laws; Augustus Houston (Lila) of Eldersburg, Md and Jerome Houston, Sr. of Lynchburg, VA; one sister-in-law, Cheryl Glass Cabell (Richard) of Lynchburg, VA. In addition, he is survived by a devoted and loving companion, Erma Jefferson; his best friend, George Johnson; and a host of loving nieces, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, MD 20735. Viewing at 10 am., followed immediately by the ceremony at 12pm.
