Edward Matthew McNamara, Jr., known to many as Mac, Mr. Mac, Coach Mac, Ed, Matt, Dad, and Pop, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 88 years old.
Born in Washington, D.C. in November 1936, Mac was the third generation of his family to live in the capital. A graduate of St. John’s College High School, Class of 1954, he remained a dedicated member of the school’s alumni association throughout his life. He joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating and proudly served until 1958 with the rank of Sergeant. Mac met his wife Loven (deceased) while stationed at Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite, Philippines.
Mac was a proud second-generation union member of Steamfitters Local 602 and spent his professional career working as a skilled steamfitter in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region. After retiring from the union, he worked for Siemens Corporation for several years as a Project Manager until fully retiring in 2001.
Mac’s passion for sports came to life in high school through the mentorship of Coach Joe Gallagher. His own coaching career began with his sons, Ed and Rick, in football at St. Margaret’s Elementary school. He later took a position Bishop McNamara as a head J.V. football coach and assistant Varsity coach in the early 70’s until the 80’s. In addition to football, Mac also coached basketball at Bishop McNamara, Suitland, and La Reine High School. His influence spanned generations of Prince George’s County athletes, and he is remembered not just for his strategies and leadership, but for the life lessons he imparted to the many young men and women he coached for over four decades
An avid athlete himself, Mac enjoyed playing basketball, golf, and softball well into his later years. He played and managed Men’s Slow pitch softball for over 40 years ending with the Bowie Gold Senior softball team.
Unknown to many, in retirement Mac was encouraged, by his good friend Kathy, to explore his creative side through creating intricate geometric patterned drawings which became his passion. His art was shared with friends and family throughout the country while traveling. His artwork was also displayed in a South Carolina art gallery exhibit. In addition to his art, Mac also loved collecting precious stones and gems.
Mac is survived by his four children: Edward (Sue), Richard (Valerie), Virginia (Gail), and Cathleen; three grandchildren: Michelle (Matt), Kathy (Hector), and Erin; two great-grandchildren: Marcus Ryan and Keira Castillo; and his devoted companion, Mary Louise McAskill. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Loven.
Edward “Mac” McNamara will be remembered for his service, his strength, his mentorship, and the deep connections he forged across a lifetime of dedication to others. His legacy endures in the lives he touched and the communities he helped build.
A celebration of Mac’s life will be held at Lee Funeral Homes in Owings, Maryland. The viewing will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a service at 12:00 p.m.
