Eleanor Jean Hammett Martin, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2026 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Born on March 27, 1933 in Morganza, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ignatius Wathen and Mary Genevieve Mattingly Wathen. Jean was the loving wife of Lawrence Matthew Hammett, Jr. for 40 years; and later of John Martin, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Deborah Brown (Robert) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Donna Taylor (Michael) of The Villages, FL, Michael Hammett (Priscilla) of Sunset Beach, NC and Michelle Miller (Jeffery) of Huntingtown, MD, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband(s), she was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence M. Hammett, III (Sonny), grandchild, Jason R. Spoeri and her siblings, John Wathen, Imelda Johnson, Mary Arban, Elizabeth Tippett, Frank Wathen, McGuire Wathen, Truman Wathen, Sr, Joseph Wathen, Phyllis Leymeister and James Wathen.
Jean grew up in St. Mary's County, MD and went to Margaret Brent High School. She married Lawrence (Larry) in 1951 and was immensely proud to call Maryland home.
Jean will always be remembered for her warmth, kindness and unconditional love that touched the lives of so many. She had a beautiful way of making those around her feel loved and cared for. The love she so freely gave, and the love she received in return, especially from her beloved grandchildren, brought her immense happiness and joy. She enjoyed the moments spent having fun and making memories, especially playing card games and the occasional slot machine.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM, with prayers recited at 7:00PM at Lee Funeral Home, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 10:30AM at Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church, 885 Cox Road, Huntingtown, MD. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD.
