With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Garrie Andrew Friend, who departed this world on June 26, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on June 2, 1944, in Ivydale, West Virginia, Garrie dedicated his life to serving his community and cherishing his family.
A proud police officer with Prince George's County, Garrie committed over three decades to ensuring the safety and well-being of his neighbors. His unwavering sense of duty exemplified a life of integrity and compassion, serving as a beacon of hope in times of need. His legacy extends far beyond his badge, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Garrie was married to the love of his life, Ruth Ann Moore, on November 30, 1969. Their partnership was a profound example of love and devotion until her passing on July 25, 2013. Their journey together forged a beautiful family, raising two devoted children: Wesley Friend, married to Patricia Parker Friend, and Beverly Wilhelm, married to Carl Wilhelm. Garrie’s heart swelled with pride as he embraced his role as a grandfather, relishing in the joys of his grandchildren—Parker, Christopher, and Emily—who continue to carry his spirit forward.
He is predeceased by his wife Ruth, his parents Robert and Eva and siblings Edna Scott, Lloydd Friend, Ernest Friend, Norma Marion, Howard Friend, Hubert "Abe" Friend and Jackson Friend, who surely welcomed him with open arms.
In the spirit of remembrance, we encourage those wishing to honor Garrie’s legacy to direct gifts in his memory to support the advancements at the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute, reflecting his belief in the power of helping others in need.
