George Nicholas Simirtzakis

October 7, 1929 — November 22, 2023

Loganville, Ga

George Nicholas Simirtzakis, 94, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, of Loganville, GA, passed away peacefully November 22, 2023 surrounded by his family.

George was born October 7, 1929, in Weirton, WV, to Nicholas and Zambella Simirtzakis, who immigrated from Greece in 1924.  The family moved to Washington, DC, where George graduated from Bell Vocational School in 1949.

George served in the Army from 1949-1951 in the Korean War, returning to Washington, DC where he worked for Peoples Drug Store.  That is where he met the love of his life, Ann Cox. He and Ann married September 10, 1954, and lived in Washington, DC, until they bought their first home in Suitland, Maryland.  They were blessed with two children, Nicholas George and Gina Marie.  George moved his family to Upper Marlboro, MD in 1972 when Ann's condition began to decline. George and Ann moved to George in late 1999. He was a devoted husband, caring for Ann through her battle with Multiple Sclerosis until her death July 22, 2000.

George was a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins and Washington Capitals.  He enjoyed attending hockey games with his children.  He loved model trains, building numerous train configurations and attending train shows with his daughter.  He was very talented when it came to construction and worked on projects around the house.  During his retirement, he attended activities at the Bethesda Church Senior Center and taught computer classes to other seniors.  George was a proud veteran and active in the VFW.  He enjoyed Rummikub, playing cornhole, gardening and bird watching.

In 2004, he met his wife Shirley.  Their beautiful companionship grew with their love of board games, traveling and their dog Bubba.  They married in 2015 and she remained by his side.

He loved all his grandchildren immensely and enjoyed spending time with them.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Zambella, his brother John, wife of 46 years Ann, and son Nick.

George is survived by his wife Shirley, sister Kally, sisters-in-law Louise Ash and Katherine Cornwell (Rick), brother-in-law Rush Cox, daughter Gina Inscoe and son-in-law Rick, stepsons Rick Cates and David Tyler (Stacey), stepdaughter Janet Payne (JR), granddaughters Samantha Capell (Michael) and Julia Cornwall (Michael), grandson Nicholas Simirtzakis, great grandsons Brooks Capell and Jude Cornwall, and great granddaughter Elliot Capell.
