Grover Leon Booker, born on May 20, 1941, in Thomson, Georgia, to the late Tommie and Queen Esther Booker, peacefully departed this life on January 13, 2026.
At a young age, Leon faced the loss of his mother, but he was lovingly nurtured by his aunt, Dora Williams, and her husband, Fred Williams. His early experiences shape the remarkable individual he would become.
Leon graduated from R. L. Norris High School in 1959, where he excelled not only academically but also as a star athlete in both football and basketball. His faith was an essential aspect of his upbringing as he attended services at Springfield Baptist Church in Thomson. Upon completing high school, he bravely joined the United States Air Force, where he met and married Madeline Gordon from Savannah, Georgia. Together, they welcomed a beloved daughter, Janice Elaine.
Throughout his distinguished Air Force career, Leon undertook overseas assignments in Morocco, Korea, and Germany, and the family frequently relocated across the United States including Oklahoma, North Carolina, California, Texas, and Maryland. He advanced through the ranks as an enlisted airman, demonstrating exceptional skills in leadership, accounting, and personnel management. His dedication led him to be accepted into Officer Training School, from which he graduated with honors. Alongside his military achievements, Leon earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degree.
In his leisure time, Leon discovered his passion for various sports, particularly racquetball and handball, achieving success in tournaments across the country. After 31 years of dedicated service, he retired as a Major at Andrews Air Force Base, where he contributed significantly in personnel management and analysis within the Air Force Systems Command. Following his military career, he served as a Systems Accountant in the Comptroller’s Office for the state of Maryland and achieved his Certified Public Accounting license, eventually starting his own tax preparation business. Leon was also an active member of his community, serving as President of his neighborhood homeowner’s association.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leon enjoyed a rich personal life filled with interests. He was an avid reader, a passionate sports fan, notably of tennis, and a lover of music, often sharing his talent at the piano. He cherished moments spent with family, offering advice and sharing laughter.
Leon is survived by his devoted wife, Madeline; his loving daughter, Janice (William) Harris; and his cherished grandchildren, Caleb, Joshua, and Asia Harris. He will also be fondly remembered by his uncle, Henry Booker; nephew, William Gordon; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; as well as his dear friends Charles Isaac, Andy Arnold, Gary Horowitz, and many loyal neighbors, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Leon Booker's legacy of love, service, and passion for life will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
