Herbert (Herbie) M. Bell, Jr. of Sunderland, MD passed away on June 18, 2022 at the age of 75.
He began his career as a Sgt. in the Patrol Division with U. S. Capitol Police in August 1968. He was one of the two founders of the U.S. Capitol Police Ceremonial Unit. Herbie retired in 1998 and moved on to work for Metropolitan Police as a training instructor and stayed until his departure in 2010. In 2015 he was accepted as a Law Enforcement Specialist Driving Instructor with Homeland Security at Cheltenham where he remained in a part-time position.
Herbie was brought up in Hillcrest Heights, MD to the late Herbert and Mae Vogelson Bell.
He began playing in bands at a young age as a singer and drummer and was quite successful. Herbie chose not to travel with the band across the country as the Police Department was his career choice just as it was for his father, uncle and three cousins. This limited his music playing for years longer to the weekends. Soon after he joined a dance club where he met his current wife of 12 years, Christine Bell. He is also survived by his daughter Julia Oberti, grandsons Larry and David, great granddaughter Layna and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home Calvert 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Monday, June 27, 2022 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm where a Funeral Service will be held at 6:00 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel with the U.S. Capitol Police honoring him. Interment will be private.
