Howard McGowan

Howard (Howie) R. McGowan, 68, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024. Howie was born on January 27, 1956, to Robert and Shirley (nee John) in Orange, New Jersey. He grew up in nearby Basking Ridge and graduated from Ridge High School in 1974. Howie attended West Virginia Wesleyan College where he captained the soccer team and earned a degree in mathematics. After college, Howie moved to Maryland where he embarked on a 38-year career with the federal government at the U.S. Census Bureau. After his retirement in 2016, he dedicated himself to volunteer work, supporting Meals on Wheels and the Humane Society of Calvert County.

Throughout his life, Howie cherished staying active, coaching soccer, and spending time with his family. He found joy in hiking, exercising, and playing pickleball. Coaching was a passion he pursued for 35 years, notably spending 26 years with the boys soccer program at Northern High School. In his later years, Howie delighted in his role as Grandpa to his four granddaughters, whom he loved to make laugh and smile. His family will remember him as a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, and friend and he will be dearly missed.

Howie is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Becky of Owings; his sons, Brian (Alicia) and Kevin (Megan) of Cherry Hill, NJ; his granddaughters, Audrey, Claire, Emily, and Maggie; his brothers: Doug (Lisa) of Fort Mill, SC, and John (Susan) of Basking Ridge, NJ.

The family has entrusted Lee Funeral Home in Owings, Maryland with the arrangements. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, August 2nd from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., with a memorial service from 12:30 p.m -  1:00 p.m. After the memorial service, there will be a celebration of life reception from 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Skipper's Pier in Deale.
