James "Jim" Rudolph Ake, age 83, of Dunkirk, Maryland, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident in South Africa, where he was visiting his beloved game farm and lodge. Born on April 30, 1942, in Washington, D.C., to Frederick James and Margaret Alvina (Olup) Ake and raised in Hollywood, Maryland.
Jim graduated in 1960 from High Point High School in Beltsville, where he was a standout three-sport athlete, excelling in baseball, football and basketball. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Maurer, on February 14, 1964 - a Valentine's Day wedding that led to a lifetime together. They reached the incredible milestone of their 62nd anniversary just prior to his passing.
Jim's legacy in the commercial swimming pool industry is profound, beginning in 1964, before founding Olympia Swimming Pool Co., Inc. - originally named Olympic - in 1982. A true visionary, he seamlessly blended technical expertise with exceptional business acumen and a strong spirit. Under his leadership, the company has served clients for more than four decades and continues to thrive.
Jim's father, Fred, was a tough D.C. police officer who instilled in Jim the work ethic he lived by his entire life. Even though Jim was semi-retired, he went to the office everyday for a few hours. He had perfected the art of the "executive presence" - staying visible enough to feel essential without actually having to dive back into the grind. There's a certain classic energy to a semi-retired boss holding court with Judge Judy in the background while waiting to dispense some "old school" wisdom.
Jim was very proud of his family and cared deeply for them. Jim taught his daughters and grandchildren what hard work, discipline, tough love, strength, and what a pretty good golf swing looks like, and was truly an inspiration to them. Nothing brought him greater pride and joy than his grandchildren. He delighted in their accomplishments and was supportive in their endeavors. He always had a piece of wisdom, or fascinating story, to share with them that they will always cherish. He adored his great granddaughter, Brielle, beyond measure. The way his face lit up when she entered the room said more than words ever could.
Jim was a man of many talents and an unforgettable personality. As a strong and rugged outdoorsman, a professional hunter, and a tough, successful businessman, he embodied resilience and determination. His adventures took him all over the world, gathering stories and experiences he loved to share. Africa, however, was his greatest passion, inspiring him to purchase a game farm and lodge he proudly named Bwana Jim Safaris.
To those who knew him, Jim was the very definition of a "man's man"-a loyal friend, a steadfast defender, and a confidant with a heart of gold. With his boisterous voice, 6'-7" height and driving his H2 hummer, Jim had a bigger than life presence that earned him the "Big Jim" title. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Stan) Nisson and Katherine (Patrick) Stepp; five grandchildren, Robert, Lauren, Thomas, Katelyn, and Joseph; his great-granddaughter, Brielle; and many relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara, who passed mere hours before him, his parents; his brothers, Freddie and Tommy; his sister, Marti; and his grandson, Mathew.
