James Lawrence Atchison Sr., known to many as Sam, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, after a brave three year battle with cancer, with his loving wife, Susie, and son, J.J. by his side.
Sam was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. He was known for his unwavering patience, calm demeanor, caring nature, and genuine appreciation for those around him. He dedicated 54 years of service as a foreman and bus mechanic to the Prince George’s County Board of Education, at the John Hanson, Brandywine and Fairmont bus lots, showing the same loyalty and work ethic in his professional life that he did in his personal one.
At home, Sam could often be found working in the yard or doing home repairs. He enjoyed spending time with his family, dining at Trader's, having his favorite hot turkey dinner and playing some slots afterwards. He also loved attending car shows and having a cup of coffee with his brother David at Wawa. When relaxing, Sam enjoyed watching reruns of classic westerns like Gunsmoke, he also enjoyed watching reruns of Mash and The Andy Griffith Show, or simply sitting on the front porch birdwatching with Susie and their dog Maisie.
Born and raised in Charles County, Maryland, Sam was the son of the late James Edward Atchison and Catherine Janie King Atchison, one of twelve siblings. He leaves behind countless cherished memories and will be deeply missed by his sister and best buddy Christine, and his brother David, with whom he shared a lifetime of joyful moments. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sam was a devoted husband to Susie for 22 years having married on September 22, 2003. He was a loving father to Lisa Michele Atchison, James Lawrence Atchison Jr.(“JJ”), dedicated stepfather to Mindy and Troy Still, and a wonderful “Paw Paw” to Brennen, Lukas, Jaxon and his little Tilly Beans as he affectionately called her.
Sam will be remembered not only for his strong work ethic but also for the kindness and compassion he extended to everyone in his life—family, friends, and colleagues alike. His legacy is one of service, humility, and love. We would all do well to carry forward the patience, calm, and kindness that Sam embodied, reflecting the true values he lived by so effortlessly.
Sam was preceded in death by his sisters Catherine Adamsky, Margaret Kramer, Mae King, Helen Graham, Edna Adams, Ellen Pickerall, and Doris Haynes, and his brothers Henry and Joseph Atchison.
Services will be held at Lee Funeral Home in Owings on Monday, September 29, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by a service at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sam’s memory to Hospice of the Chesapeake would be greatly appreciated.
