James Allen Smith

June 17, 1946 — February 12, 2022

James Allen Smith, 75, of Rockville, MD passed away on February 12, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones. James, or Jim, as many called him, was born in June of 1946 to the late Julia and Thomas Smith in Johnson City, TN. He grew up in Perryville, MD along with his 2 sisters. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1968 and then Howard University with a master’s degree in Psychology. After serving as a captain in the Public Health Service, he returned to the University of Maryland and in 1975, obtained a degree in Architecture, his true passion. He continued working in the home building industry, eventually retiring from Toll Brothers. Jim loved to travel and to give back to the community. He worked for Habitat for Humanity for several years. After retiring, he also became interested in refurbishing computers. That interest led him to working at Phoenix Computers in Rockville, a non- profit, which empowered low income families and the disabled by providing low cost refurbished computers. He is survived by his partner Rosa Chen, daughter Jennifer Chapman and her husband Robert, sisters Kathryn Bowling and family and Patty Karwacki and family, and grandchildren Amanda Chapman, Emily Chapman, and Bobby Chapman. The family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane Owings, MD 20736 on Monday, February 28, 2022 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm where a Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel.
