Joan Angela Jones

Joan Angela Jones of Oxon Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully at her home on March 31, 2025, at the age of 88.

Joan was born on November 29, 1936, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, to Andrew and Clity French. She was the eldest of five children and carried the strength and grace of that role throughout her life. After graduating from Haight High School, she pursued her passion for caring for others by studying nursing abroad at Three Counties Hospital Nursing School in Bedfordshire, England.

While living in England in 1962, Joan met and married James Jones, a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States Air Force. Together they had one son, James Derek Jones. In 1964, the family was reassigned to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where they built a home filled with love and purpose.

Joan began her career as a Registered Nurse at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX launching a 40-year journey in healthcare marked by compassion, resilience, and service to others. Her devotion to nursing left a lasting impact on countless patients and colleagues.

After retiring in 2012, Joan embraced her favorite roles as grandmother, artist, and storyteller. She lovingly dedicated her time to her grandson, Jonathan Derek Jones, and filled her days with scrapbooking, calligraphy, and the quiet joys of creative expression.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Clity French.

She is survived by her cherished son, James Derek Jones, daughter-in-law Wanda Jones (son Jeremy Duntae’ Campbell), and grandson Jonathan Derek Jones. She is also survived by her siblings: Kathleen (Peggy) French, Grace Mills, Belling French and Quinder Dokes.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of her nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends and colleagues who were blessed by her warmth and wisdom.
