John Arthur Epps was born September 6, 1939 in Essex County, Virginia to the late Frank O. Epps and Eva Della Epps. He departed this life on December 10, 2023. He was preceded in death by his brothers James Epps and Frank R. Epps, his sister Mary Betty Jordan, and son Donald Epps.

John was educated in Essex County Schools in Virginia prior to relocating to Washington, DC with his family. After graduating from Armstrong High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956 where he served on the USS Galveston (CL-93) and entertained the ship with his musical talents (singing and playing the guitar). Upon leaving the Navy and Reserves, he joined the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) in July 1967 as a Bus Operator. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1979, under the GI Bill, from the University of the District of Columbia in Architectural Engineering. After retirement he enjoyed teaching music, spending time with his grandchildren, exercising his engineering skills around the house, and assisting his neighbors with design and construction projects. John also loved watching old Western and Army movies, sharing stories about the family history, and communing with his old buddies from METRO.
