JoAnn G. Johnson

Jan 18, 1963 — Aug 22, 2026

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of JoAnn Gray Johnson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted community member, who left us peacefully on August 22, 2026, at the age of 63. Born on January 18, 1963, in Washington D.C. to Melvin and Clara Gray, JoAnn lived a life rich with purpose and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her.

A proud graduate of Suitland High School in 1981, JoAnn's passions flourished from a young age. An avid square dancer in her teenage years, she found joy in movement, rhythm, and community dancing whenever the opportunity arose. Her spirit of service was deeply rooted, exemplified by her remarkable commitment to the Forestville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, which she joined in 1977, dedicating an astounding 49 years to support her community. Additionally, JoAnn actively participated with the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary and the Maryland State Firefighter’s Ladies Auxiliary for over four decades, making a lasting impact on countless lives.

In October 1981, JoAnn met her soulmate, Kevin Johnson, in “the Alley,” a bonding moment that set the stage for a beautiful marriage that would span 43 wonderful years. Together, they built a loving family, welcoming their two daughters Jennifer Johnson-Moats (Lawrence) and Jessica Grzybowski (Steve); and her cherished grandchildren, Marissa, Hanna, Mia, Maci, and Hunter. JoAnn took immense joy in attending every softball game, football match, and dance recital, cherishing those moments spent surrounded by family, which meant everything to her.

She is also survived by her devoted mother, Clara Gray; her loving in-laws, Robert and Barbara Johnson; her brother, Tommy Gray (Mary); Sister-in-law, Karen Ford and Brother-in-law, Keith Johnson (Shell), along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and treasured family friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Gray Sr.

The family will welcome friends for a visitation at Lee Funeral Home Calvert 8200 Jennifer Lane Owings, MD 20736 on August 30, 2026, from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm with a Fire Department Memorial Service at 7:00pm. JoAnn's funeral service will follow the next day on August 31, 2026, at 12:00PM held in Lee Funeral Homes Chapel. Burial will follow immediately after.

In this time of remembrance, let us come together to honor a remarkable woman whose love, laughter, and legacy will forever shine brightly in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Hospital or the Forestville Ladies Auxilliary in honor of our Mom, JoAnn.
