Karen Downs Sanders, 73, passed away peacefully at her home in Forestville, Maryland, on July 8, 2026, where she had resided for over 46 years. Born in Washington, D.C. on August 23, 1952, Karen lived a life filled with love, devotion, and a deep appreciation for life's simple joys.
Karen was married to the love of her life, Robert "Bobby" Sanders, with whom she shared over 16 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they shared many adventures, and she truly loved nothing more than riding on the back of Bobby’s Harley Davidson, feeling the wind and the freedom of the open road.
Her greatest legacy, however, was her daughter. Karen and her daughter, Tammy Marie Kuntz of Colonial Beach, Virginia, shared a rare and profound bond like no other; Tammy was truly her entire world. Karen was also a woman of immense warmth who cherished her friends deeply and had a fierce love for all animals, especially her own beloved cats.
She is survived by her mother, Catherine Louise Binger of LaPlata, Maryland; her sister, Mary Ann Jordan of California, Maryland; and many loving nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
Karen was preceded in death by her father, George Thomas Downs of Avenue, Maryland; her brother, James Steven Downs of Avenue, Maryland; and her grandmother, Grace Louise Mattingly of Bushwood, Maryland.
Karen’s vibrant spirit, kind heart, and absolute dedication to those she loved will be profoundly missed, but her memory will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
