Oxon Hill

With deep love and remembrance, we honor the life of Laura Alice Walker, who departed this life on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Laura Alice Walker was born on April 24, 1949, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late James Mitchell, Sr. and Almeta Harvey Mitchell. From humble beginnings, Laura grew into a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Laura was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Joshua Hewlin Walker. Together they built a life rooted in love, resilience, and faith. She was a proud and loving mother to Valinshia Denise Walker, Natasha Monique Walker, and Alexa Sada Walker. She was preceded in death by two of her children, Shironda Walker and Joshua Walker, whom she loved dearly and carried in her heart always.

Her love extended richly into the next generations. She cherished her grandchildren—Victoria and husband Anthony Holton, Jehan and wife Keirra Slater, Takayla Walker, Jade Henry, and Jahari Gadson—each of whom brought her immense pride and joy. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Kayden Wilson and Amari Holton, who were lights in her life.

Laura is survived by her sisters:  Mary Rook, and Ernestine Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her sisters Barbara Jean Mitchell Hughes, Delores Tulloss and James Mitchell. The bond she shared with her family was deep and enduring, and she remained a source of strength and encouragement to them all.

Determined and hardworking, Laura earned her GED from Spingarn High School in Washington, DC, demonstrating her commitment to education and personal growth. She dedicated many years of service to the Prince George’s County Public School System, working as a food attendant in local elementary and middle schools. In that role, she nourished not only the bodies of countless children but also touched lives with her warm smile, kind spirit, and gentle presence.

Laura will be remembered for her quiet strength, her nurturing heart, and her steadfast love for her family. She found joy in caring for others and took pride in ensuring that those around her were supported and uplifted. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we celebrate a life well lived and a legacy that will continue through the generations she leaves behind. Her love remains woven into the fabric of her family, and her memory will forever be cherished.
