LaWan Annette Sweetenberg passed away peacefully at her home in North Beach, Maryland, on August 19, 2026.

Born in Washington, D.C., to Lewis and Beryl Sweetenburg, LaWan was the second of their four children. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, she began her career with the federal government in 1981. During her 41 years of service, LaWan worked with the Department of Commerce, Social Security Administration, NAVAIR within the Department of Defense, the White House High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, and the Internal Revenue Service. She retired in November 2020 after a long and dedicated career.

LaWan had a caring and beautiful spirit and formed many lasting friendships throughout her life. She treasured those relationships and made a point of staying connected with the people she loved.

A true adventurer at heart, LaWan loved traveling and seeing the world. Her journeys took her to Italy, Greece, England, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Mexico, the Bahamas, Africa, and across the United States. She also enjoyed 12 memorable cruises. Whether traveling with family and friends or setting out on her own, LaWan embraced every adventure with independence, confidence, and her wonderfully free-spirited nature.

LaWan also enjoyed reading, crafting, and spending time with her family. She shared a close and loving bond with her sister, Tina, and was deeply devoted to helping raise Tina’s children, Antonio and Nicole. She played an important role in their lives, and the three shared a lasting connection that remained one of the greatest joys of her life.

LaWan was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lewis and Beryl Sweetenburg, and her brothers, Taft (Denise) and Angelo. She is survived by her sister, Tina (the late Tony); nephews Antonio II “Tony” (Mia) and Kevin; nieces Nicole, Shainna, and Krystal (Rohan); great-nephew Antonio III “Little Tony”; and great-nieces Ciona and Sage.

LaWan will be remembered for her beautiful spirit, adventurous heart, cherished friendships, and deep love for her family. She lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind countless memories and a legacy of love that will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
