Lonnie Frazier Bartholomew Russell

March 19, 1949 — September 21, 2022

District Heights, MD

Lonnie Frazier Bartholomew Russell was born to the late Donald and June Russell in Salisbury, Maryland on March 19, 1949.  He was one of 7 children.  He graduated from James M. Bennett Sr. High School and became a member of the United States Marine Corps serving in the Vietnam War from 1968 – 1970.  During his time of service, Lonnie’s company went on a mission that ended tragically, where he was the lone survivor at the time. The difficulties of this transition earned him several honors for defending his country and protecting his fallen comrades.  The severity of his medical condition affected the longevity of his service career earning him an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps.  He will be laid to rest at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery with full military honors at a date to be determined.  Semper Fi!

Lonnie married Rosa “Cookie” Phillips on June 18, 2008. Lonnie and Cookie shared an incredible love for each other and their family.  He was a devoted husband and father.  Lonnie was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, George Washington Hospital and Inova Hospital and was loved by all who knew and worked with him. Lonnie’s passion was his faith in God, love of Cookie and his family. He and Cookie’s shared love was bowling, and Lonnie was affectionately known as “Big Russ” and “Striker” in the bowling community.

On September 21, 2022, Lonnie slipped away to be with God.  His brother Donald H. Russell, Jr., and sister Lourene Russell Ray preceded him in death.

Lonnie leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Rosa, his sisters Wendy (Chip), Denise and brother Martin (Cindy); three daughters, Stacey Huggins, Sherri Katina Russell, and Lauren Russell; one step-daughter, Katina Washington; three step-sons, Kelly Key, Marcus Key, Darnell Key; grandchildren, Ky’ono, Aaliyahmarie, Travis, Bentley, Raymond, Teonni, Tamari, Taylor, Marcus, Aaron, Alona and wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
