Lucille Alice Asbury

“Through it all, my eyes are on You, and it is well with my soul.”

Lucille Alice Asbury, affectionately known as "Lu," "LuLu," "Ms. Lu," "Mama Lu,""Lucy-Pearl," and "Grammy," was born on November 14, 1940, in Washington, D.C.,to the late LeRoy A. Brannock, Sr. and Alice P. Brannock. Lucille entered eternal rest at home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Lucille was raised in Washington, D.C., where she attended D.C. Public Schools and graduated from Cardozo High School in 1958. She often fondly recalled singing in the hallways alongside fellow Cardozo student and future R&B legend Marvin Gaye, who playfully teased her about singing off-key. The day after graduating, she began her professional career with the D.C. Juvenile Court while simultaneously attending Howard University from 1958 to 1960. During that time, she aspired to become a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Lucille dedicated her entire government career to the D.C. Juvenile Court, later the D.C. Superior Court, where she faithfully served for more than 36½ years. Through hard work, professionalism, and unwavering commitment, she rose to become Supervisor of the Domestic Relations Branch of the Family Division before retiring. It was there, in 1962, that she met the love of her life, William L. Asbury, Jr., affectionately known as Billy.

On March 21, 1964, Lucille and Billy were united in holy matrimony, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned 62 years. Together they built a loving home and were blessed with two children and two grandchildren. Billy faithfully fulfilled the promise he made to always care for her, demonstrating a lifetime of unconditional love and devotion. Family was Lucille's greatest joy. She treasured every moment spent with her loved ones, especially helping raise her grandchildren during their earliest years. Even as they grew into adulthood, she never stopped asking about their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, and surrounding them with her endless love.

At the age of 12, Lucille accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Zion Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful and devoted member for 49 years. Her unwavering commitment to the church was recognized with a Service Award of  Appreciation for her dedication, leadership, willingness to serve, and steadfast faithfulness in July 2023. Her relationship with God was the foundation of her life, and few things brought her greater joy than worshipping through music with the Senior Choir. As a devoted alto, she faithfully served under the leadership of Ministers of Music Jennie G. Smith, Judith T. Allen, and Sam Barnes. The choir was truly her happy place, and she formed lifelong friendships that she treasured deeply. When her health no longer allowed her to attend services in person, she remained steadfast in her faith by faithfully watching worship services online every Sunday and singing along with the choir each fourth Sunday.

Lucille also faithfully served the church's Health Ministry and quietly blessed countless people by sending greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, illnesses, celebrations, and sometimes for no special occasion at all—simply to let others know they were loved. She also served as a Sunday School teacher alongside her late aunt, Irene B. Miller, a lifelong Zion Baptist Church member.

Lucille found joy in life's simple pleasures, especially sharing good food with family and friends. She loved exploring new restaurants and experiencing different cuisines, always curious about what everyone else had ordered and eager to try something new. Among her favorite dishes were James' famous greens, Tasha's sweet potato pies, and her absolute favorite—crabs. She was also an enthusiastic sports fan who rarely missed the opportunity to watch a game or competition. Whether it was football, tennis, or track and field, she enjoyed the excitement of sports, but basketball held a special place in her heart. A devoted Boston Celtics fan, she especially enjoyed cheering for her favorite player, Jason Tatum. And she was not to be disturbed at 2:00 p.m. when General Hospital was on.

Graceful, classy, and elegant, Lucille believed in presenting herself with dignity and style. She was always beautifully dressed from head to toe, often accessorizing her signature scarves, brooches, and fashionable hats. Her warmth extended far beyond her appearance. She expressed love through hospitality, generosity, and service. An exceptional cook and baker, she delighted family and friends with homemade pistachio cakes, coffee cakes with pecans, yellow cakes topped with chocolate or caramel icing, her famous punch bowl cakes, and countless other treats prepared for birthdays, holidays, and "just because." If she wasn't offering homemade desserts, she was sure to insist you leave with candy, chips, honey buns, or another sweet treat. Giving to others brought her genuine happiness. She truly lived the words, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy A. Brannock, Sr. and Alice P. Brannock; her late brother, LeRoy A. Brannock, Jr.; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory the love of her life and devoted husband, William L. Asbury, Jr.; her son, William L. Asbury, III (Yvonne); her daughter, Tasha C. Carter (James); her beloved grandchildren, Alexus Carter, and James A. Carter, III; her brother, Vincent K. Brannock, Sr. (Valetta); her nephew, Vincent K. Brannock, Jr.; her nieces, Tracey A. Wilson (Andrew), and Lisa M. Brannock; four great-nephews; one great-niece; and a host of loving cousins, extended family members, dear friends, and church family who will forever cherish her memory.
