Marcella Sawyer, 92, born on March 10, 1933, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, passed away peacefully in Culpepper, VA on June 16, 2025. She was born in the very home that now houses the local priest, a symbol of the deep roots she held in the community she loved. Marcella was a devoted mother to two children, John and Rebecca Sawyer. She is also survived by her beloved siblings: David Ridgely, Jocelyn Crawley, Carroll Timothy, and George Frederick. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and nine siblings who went before her. Marcella worked diligently throughout her life, holding two jobs to support her family.
She spent four years as a secretary at a law firm in Upper Marlboro and later served as a clerk of the court at the county courthouse, where she filed land titles until 1967. She worked alongside her mother during this time, and together they ensured her son John could attend private school—a testament to her dedication to family and education. Marcella was known for her warm spirit and joyful presence. She loved cooking, drinking beer, and spending quality time with her loved ones. Her simple yet rich diet often consisted of cabbage, potatoes, and beer—thanks in part to her husband’s work at a beer distribution center, which kept her favorite beverage close at hand.
In 2002, Marcella moved to Locust Grove, Virginia, to live with her son John and his wife Ann. Not long after, a plot of land became available right across the street, and she seized the opportunity to build a home of her own—a place where she continued to create memories with her family. Marcella will be remembered for her resilience, her love of life, and the laughter she shared with everyone around her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
