Mario Stephen Mendez

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mario Stephen Mendez, who departed this life peacefully at his home in Selbyville, DE, surrounded by his loving family on September 27, 2026. Born in Logan, West Virginia, Mario was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of many with his warmth, generosity, and spirited personality.

A graduate of Bowie High School in Bowie, Maryland, Mario pursued his passion for welding at Lincoln Tech Welding School, leading to a fulfilling career at McLean Contracting Co. and Chesapeake Ship Building Corp. He took immense pride in his work and was admired for his craftsmanship and dedication.

Mario was more than just a skilled welder; he was a vibrant soul who loved life to the fullest. He cherished his time on the ice, where he showcased his talent and love for hockey, being a true fan of the Washington Capitals. His cinematic passion was equally profound, as he found joy in revisiting the poignant moments of his favorite Rocky movies. 

Mario leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Barbara Mendez, his cherished children: Christina Mendez-Karpin (Rob) (mom Valerie), Stephanie Mendez (mom Kathy), Camryn Mendez, Mario Mendez Jr., and Aaron Mendez, along with his stepchildren: Samantha Diaz, Amber, Briana, and Christian. He was a proud grandfather to Adaline Karpin and Scarlett Detrick, as well as step-grandfather to Michael, Alex, Urijah, Ariani, Damian, Kaden, Samara, and Atreus.

He will be remembered fondly by his mother, Retta Sorsdal, and his brothers, Manuel Mendez III (Debi) and the late Michael Mendez. Mario was preceded in death by his father Manuel Mendez Jr.

Mario’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed.

To honor his remarkable life, funeral services will be held at Lee Funeral Home Calvert on October 3, 2026. A public viewing is scheduled from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Mario will be laid to rest at a burial ceremony commencing at 2:45 PM at 900 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD.
