Mary Lou Holt, 98, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully after a long and remarkable life. Born September 17, 1928, in Durham to James Hastings Whitfield and Ethel Marie Brinn, Mary Lou was the third of eight children and is survived only by her beloved baby sister, Patricia.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, James Chesley Holt Jr., her children Nathan Brinn Holt and Rosanne, James Chesley Holt III, her granddaughter Sarah Rose Holt, and great‑grandson Wesley Sean Easterlin.
She is survived by her children Vicki Lynn Kellam (Tim), K. Todd Holt (Carol), Davis Whitfield Holt (Alice), and daughter‑in‑law Diane Holt. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: M. Katie Ganoe, April Wintermyer (Michael), Sean Easterlin (Shannon), James “Little Jimmy” Holt IV, Mary Spencer (J. Lynn), Mason Holt (Meagan), Joshua Holt, Chelsea Holt (Keith Stolte), and Julie Holt.
She was blessed with great‑grandchildren Heather Mazzone, Ryan Ganoe, Devon Dehn (Elizabeth), Cassandra Dehn, Chesley Holt (Leah), Brycen Spencer, Logan Ganoe, Elizabeth Easterlin, Caleb Spencer, Deacon Spencer, Brooke Easterlin, Owen Easterlin, Easton Spencer, and Mia Rose Holt, and great‑great‑grandchildren Haileigh White and Luca Mazzone.
Mary Lou lived a life full of curiosity, grit, and unforgettable personality. Growing up, her family remembers her beloved parakeet Periwinkle, her famous “goolosh,” and the jars of snakes she proudly collected from the yard. She was feisty, funny, and wonderfully feral—always into something, always surprising those around her. As the years passed, she softened into a warm, snuggly great‑grandmother whose love was steady and abundant.
Her 98 years were filled with adventure, mischief, resilience, and devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, and stories that will be told for generations.
Mary Lou will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who loved her.
