Matthew Eric Vowell

Nov 14, 1977 — Jul 12, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Matthew E. “Groot” Vowell, 48, of Friendship, MD, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident alongside his beloved wife, Krystal Wittschack Vowell.

Born on November 14, 1977 in Anne Arundel County, Matthew was the cherished son of Larry R. Vowell and Alma (Seekford.) After graduating from Southern High School, he took on becoming a step-father early on in his life which blessed him with his first son Kenny Lowe (Lacey.) His first marriage further expanded his family with his first-born daughter, Mattalyn (Jason) of Melbourne, FL. Although Matt and Krystal knew each-other since childhood, they did not reconnect until 2009, when his family grew to include her son; Robert Wood Jr and then, they later had their son, Dakota. They finally married on 5/14/2021 at their home in Friendship, MD.

He’s had various jobs through the years and has been Self Employed as a Heavy Machine Operator doing demolition and repair services. He was incredibly talented with his hands, if something was broken, chances are he could fix it. He had a natural ability to solve problems, build, repair, and help others without hesitation. Family, friends, and neighbors knew they could always count on him when they needed a helping hand.

Matt was the kind of person who could light up any room with his quick wit and sense of humor. He was always joking, making others laugh, and never made you feel like a stranger. He had a gift for making everyone around him feel welcome.

Matt and Krystal created their own home at her family residence where they could help support her parents, Fred and Dee Wittschack. They shared a remarkable love that was evident to everyone who knew them. Whether they were enjoying scenic rides together on his Harley-Davidson or simply spending time with family and friends, they embraced life side by side. Their bond was built on love, loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.

For the past 8 years, Groot found yet again another family through the club, The Kingsman, giving him a lot more brothers where he enjoyed the freedom of riding on the back of his Street Glide with his “Old Lady, Smiley.” For the past 3 years he was the President and spent a lot of time creating memories all across the county and states. He greatly enjoyed hanging out with his band of brothers, riding and sponsoring charity events. Known for his generous heart and willingness to help anyone in need, Matt believed in giving back to his community.

Matt will be remembered for his infectious smile, many nights of karaoke performances, off-roading adventures, his love for the open road, and the countless memories he created with those he loved. Though his life was cut tragically short, the impact he made on his family, friends, and community will never be forgotten.

He was preceded in death by both his parents, grandparents Lummie & Mattie Vowell and brother-in-law Robert "Bob" Oxley. Leaving behind his brother Chappy (Natalie), sister Heidi Zook Oxley, 4 children and grandchildren Kolby and Westlee Lowe; along with his aunts; Susan Lumpkin, Janice Sprayberry and Staci Burd. Beloved nieces; Baylee and Chloe Vowell, Cierra Stack, Ashli Baez and Samantha Landon, great nieces; Haylee and Aubree Yingling along with sister-in-laws; Vania Miles and Jodi Landon (Danny,) cousins and many dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Matthew and Krystal's life was a testament to love, generosity, and living each day to the fullest. Though they left this world together, the love they shared and the lives they touched will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

A memorial service will be held at Lee Funeral Home-Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 12pm in the Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Go Fund Me to help support the children as they struggle to navigate this terrible transition and guardianship of the youngest sibling.
