In Loving Memory of Michael Paul Smith February 15, 1946 – May 15, 2023, Michael Paul Smith, “Mike”, age 77, of Bowie, MD, passed away on May 15, 2023, of natural causes. Mike was born in Washington, D.C. on February 15, 1946, to the late Jacob and Jean Smith. Mike graduated from Mackin High School, class of 1964 and went on to receive his Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland. Mike met his wife Cherlyn in junior college, and they were married October 1968; together they brought five children into this world, prior to her passing in November 1996. Mike retired from his construction company, Woodsmith Enterprises. Previously a Technical Director of Computer Science. Mike's intelligence and resourcefulness were matched only by his quick wit and problem-solving abilities. Mike loved to learn new things and loved to share that knowledge with others. He made a lasting impact on the lives of many, leaving behind cherished memories and a trail of grateful hearts. Outside of his professional accomplishments, Mike was a simple man who had an unwavering love for his dogs and found solace in the tranquility of nature. He loved spending his free time in the garden and out in the yard with his pets. Mike loved to eat what he grew, photographing and painting nature, reading books, and building things. He leaves behind a legacy of ingenuity, craftsmanship, and a lot of bird feeders.
Michael is survived by his loving family, including his five children, Shannon, Shawn, Stephen, Jean, and Michael (Mikey); his ten grandchildren, John, Cheyenne, Travis, Kayleh, Karleh, Stephen, Wilhem, Tessa, Chase, and Bryce; his three great-grandchildren, Emma, Rhys, and Harper; His brothers Jeffrey & Jacob; his sisters Shelia, Rita, Tina, and Rose. As well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him throughout his lifetime here on earth. Without a doubt he will be missed by his four-legged family, Lexi, Otis, Cane & Candy who will no longer have all the crumbs that never made it into his mouth. In lieu of burying him in the backyard in a plywood box (per his request), we decided to take a different route....
In honor of Michael's life, the family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm followed by a short service at noon. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD 20735.
Friends and loved ones will have the opportunity to share stories, celebrate his accomplishments, and find solace in one another's company. While Michael's presence may no longer grace this world, his spirit and the legacy of his work will continue to inspire. May his memory be a guiding light, reminding us to nurture our passions, embrace our creativity, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Michael Paul Smith's legacy will endure, forever etched in our hearts.
