Reginald Surratt, affectionately known as Reggie to many, entered eternal rest on May 21, 2026, at the age of 72. Reginald was born on June 15, 1953, in Washington, D.C., to the late Thomas Surratt and Florine Swann. He was educated in the DC Public School System. Shortly, after graduating high school in 1971, Reggie entered into the US Army. While in the US Army, Reggie furthered his education by obtaining an Associate's degree. Reggie's job in the Army was in field artillery. He was in charge of a gun battery. Reggie would often compare what he did to an NFL quarterback calling plays. When they would set up the battery line, he would call out orders in the from of a play as to when, where, and how often to shoot, or "Steel rain", as he would describe it. He always said 10th Mountain Division was the "King of Battle". During his Army career he achieved a couple of notable milestones. One of those milestones was him becoming a Drill Sergeant, teaching young new recruits entering into the army in basic training. The other milestone came later in his career when he successfully completed the Sergeant Majors Academy and was later promoted to Sergeant Major. Reggie retired honorably 23 years later at the rank of Sergeant Major in 1998.

In retirement, just without his BDU's and Boots, Reggie always said "I am a soldier for life". He faithfully wore his army-issued dog tags too.

He loved his sons and his grandchildren. Whether he was buying birthday or Christmas gifts, or sending grandchildren money for summer camps, he tried to be involved in his own way. He also took care of nieces and nephews in any way needed. He had a special place in his heart for the kids.

He was a person of the community. He spoke to everyone, and if you didn't know him you were about to. For those meeting him for the first time, you would leave knowing he was a soldier in the 10th Mountain Division, and they were the "King of Battle". In his leisure time, he loved watching baseball. The Washington Nationals were his team, win or lose. Some of his favorite players were Juan Soto and Bryce Harper. Being born in Washington, D.C. he was a diehard Redskins fan. RFK stadium, Joe Gibbs, and Jack Kent Cooke were his era. He bled burgundy and gold. He routinely said if you live in my house, you are a Redskins fan bottom line. When a baseball or football game wasn't on, Reggie could be found watching his show, Hogans Heroes. He also loved westerns and war movies. Reggie was also a big "giver". He donated to several organizations and foundations. He was heavy into politics. He would often write to members of Congress, the Governor of Maryland, as well s the President of the United States. He wrote to Joe Biden after Biden's son had passed. When Joe Biden wrote him back, you would have thought they were old friends the way he talked about it. He was also an avid watcher of MSNBC and made sure he kept his "finger on the pulse" with current events. He wasn't tech savvy but once he learned how to text and send emojis there was no stopping him on spreading news, information, or well wishes. He will be missed.

Reggie is survived by his three sons: Rashad, Frank, Stanley; his grandchildren: Taylor, Taryn, Raea, Brynlee, Owen, and Oakley; and a host of other relatives and friends.
