Rudolph Valentino Spiers
July 28, 1929 - February 5, 2024

Rudolph Valentino Spiers of Camp Springs, MD passed away Monday, February 5, 2024 at the
Hospice of Charles County.

Rudy was born in Roanoke, Virginia to play GOLF. He launched his golf career at the age of 12, following
in his brother's footsteps by becoming a caddy at Roanoke Country Club. In 1948 he graduated from The
Viaud School in Roanoke and enlisted in the Air Force. His time in the Air Force paved the way for him to
pursue his passion professionally. While on active duty, he served two tours as general manager of the
golf courses at Andrews Air Force Base. In his 20 years of military service, he competed in innumerable
tournament championships, clinching the Air Force Title in 1960.

After retiring from the military, Rudy embarked on a career as a sales representative for Pro Group
Incorporated selling golf equipment to courses in the MidAtlantic region. He retired again in 1985 but in
1988 was enticed to return to work in the Pro Shop at Andrews Air Force Base.

From the 1960s to 1980s Rudy won the Andrews Air Force Base club championship a record 15 times.
And held titles at other area clubs as well. He had records for at least four holes-in-one.
He considered himself blessed to spend his last 20 years playing golf at least three days a week with the
best foursome a man could hope to find. When he wasn’t playing or watching golf, Rudy was either
working Super Expert Sudoku, cutting grass or visiting one of his various watering holes to play cards,
pool or just chat with his many buddies. He relished his time at the Marlboro Moose, engaging in lively
games of league shuffleboard, and looked forward to leisurely Saturday evenings spent listening to
Karaoke and playing just for fun. He was a member of the American Legion-Clinton Post 259 for 44
years.

Rudy was predeceased by his parents Watson Everette and Dora Willis Spiers; his wife of 51 years,
Clarice (Rece) Hoskins Spiers in April of 2011 and his brother, Rufus E. Spiers, also a championship
golfer, in December, 2014.

He is survived by his son, James (Jim) C. Spiers; daughter, Judith (Judi) L. Spiers; granddaughter,
Scarlett Spiers; nieces, nephews, and countless dear friends.
Family and friends will gather to remember Rudy at the American Legion, 9122 Piscataway Road,
Clinton, MD on Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 1 to 3 pm. He will be laid to rest at Cheltenham Veterans
Cemetery at a later date.
