Russell “Russ” William Younkers, 77, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center.

Russ was born on March 4, 1946, in Baltimore.  He graduated from Milford Mill High School in 1964 and went on to further his education at Frostburg State College, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1968.  After college, Russ taught Physical Education at Mt. Rainier Junior High School and Bowie High School.  In 1972, Russ joined the Prince George’s County Police Department.  Prior to his retirement in 1992, Russ proudly served the Department for 20 years and achieved the rank of Sergeant.  Afterward, he worked as a Project Manager for the Prince George’s County Government until his second retirement in 2021.

Russ met his wife, Penny, in 1964 and they were married in Baltimore in 1968.  They moved to Prince George’s County after they were married, and settled in Calvert County in 1977, where they raised their family.  Russ was an avid supporter and fan of Frostburg Men’s Soccer, the Bowie Baysox and the Washington Capitals. He enjoyed umpiring, golf, coaching and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting and other events.

Russ is survived by his wife of 55 years, Penny English Younkers and his children, Stacy (Jamey) Modlin and Michael (Rachael) Younkers.  He was a proud “Granddad” to his three beloved grandsons, Ryan Trotter and Andrew and Alex Younkers.  Also surviving is his sister, Debbie (Keith) Spicer and her family, and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held in the near future, so family and friends can come together to honor and remember Russ.  Details will be shared at a later date.
