Shelly Mitchell Corcoran, a vibrant spirit and beloved member of the Huntingtown community, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, at the age of 50, after a courageous six-year battle with a solitary fibrous tumor. Born on May 20, 1975, in Washington, DC, Shelly was raised in La Plata, MD, where she attended La Plata High School, excelling in field hockey, cheerleading, and track. Her athleticism carried her to Frostburg State University, where she not only played field hockey but also forged lasting friendships as a member of Delta Zeta sorority.
Shelly’s passion for learning led her to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business from the University of Maryland, University College. Her career flourished as a Director of Human Resources, where her dedication shone brightly, influencing countless lives through her professional contributions.
A devoted wife to James Corcoran Jr. and a nurturing mother to daughters Emily and Hayley, Shelly filled her family’s lives with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Her pride in her daughters was evident as she cheered them on at countless softball, basketball, and soccer games. She infused her life with joy, whether she was relishing Sunday afternoons watching the Washington Redskins, celebrating University of Maryland basketball victories, or enjoying refreshing moments at the beach with friends and family, a cold beer in hand.
Shelly is survived by her loving husband, James; daughters Emily and Hayley; her parents, John and Sybil Mitchell of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; and her brother, Jay Mitchell, along with his wife, Tammie, and their children: Noah, Claire, and Alex. She was preceded in death by her cherished grandparents, John and Helen Mitchell, and Wendell and Joyce Alexander.
Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her. In honor of her memory, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00pm at 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings MD 20736 followed by a memorial service at 12:00pm, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Shelly’s life.
