Stephen Timothy Campbell

September 10, 1961 — January 10, 2026

Stephen Campbell, 64, of Prince Frederick, Maryland, passed away on January 10, 2026, with his family by his side.

Stephen was born in Geneva, New York, on September 10, 1961, to Dennis and Claire (Decker) Campbell. His family settled in Riva, Maryland, where he graduated from South River High School in 1979 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After he completed his service, he joined the Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD). He met Julie Ryan Campbell, his beloved wife of 32 years, in 1992. They were married on September 11, 1993, and have an abundance of happy memories from their years together.

Stephen’s career was based on serving his country and community. In the four years he was in the United States Marine Corps, he was a field radio operator and Drill Instructor at Parris Island. He then spent a total of 40 years in Law Enforcement, joining the PGPD in 1985, retiring at the rank of Corporal in 2012. His units included Patrol, Academy Instructor, Motors, Robbery, Narcotics, and Homicide. After his police service, he joined the College of Southern Maryland’s Campus Public Safety Department in 2012, found time to teach a few Criminology classes, was appointed the head men’s lacrosse coach, and retired at the rank of Sergeant in 2025. Stephen returned to PGPD as a civilian in the Gun Crimes unit. In his spare time, he took great joy in being involved in local youth sports. Spending weeknights and weekends coaching, refereeing, and traveling to games and tournaments. Stephen was a mentor to many throughout his life. He took pride in shaping young minds and setting his students and players up for success. He was always there to lend an ear, offer advice, and celebrate the wins of everyone he taught or coached. Many of those students and players kept in touch with Stephen and would reach out years after. He was also a known history “buff,” especially when it came to Irish and Scottish history and his heritage; he enjoyed many aspects of the Celtic culture, such as playing the bagpipes for the PGPD Bagpipe Band.

Stephen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Claire (Decker) Campbell, his daughter Aileen Marie, and his sister-in-law Molly (Ryan) Negus. He is survived by his wife, Julie Ryan Campbell, daughters Caitlin Healy (Chris Parsons) and Erin Levine (Keith), and his son Ian; his grandchildren Kevin Healy-Parsons and Sophia Levine; his sisters Cynthia Sullivan and Patricia Campbell; and his brother-in-law Tayloe Negus. Affectionally known as Uncle Steve, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.
