Weston “Buzz” Evans Sawyer, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Solomon’s Island, Maryland on 30 July. Born in Orono, Maine, on November 1, 1932, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War from March 17, 1953, to March 16th, 1955. Weston attended Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland from May until August of 1953, followed by service as an Ammunition Supply Specialist for Service Company of the 9th Infantry Regimen at Fort Lewis, in Washington. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.
Weston was predeceased in death by his wife, Bertha (Gropp) Sawyer, mother Phyllis (Hannaford) Sawyer, Father Clayton Sawyer, sister Rena (Sawyer) Brewrink, as well as previous spouses Marilyn (Wilkins) Jackson, and Marion Kay (Allebach) Sawyer. Weston is survived by his children Mark (Wendy) Sawyer, Donna (Gary) Robertson, Randall (Laura) Sawyer, David Gropp, and Donald (Terri) Gropp. As well as grandchildren Samuel Sawyer, Matthew Sawyer, Ashley (Alex) Moore, Daniel (Heather) Robertson, Jade (Justin) Burbank, Brittany (Javier) Gropp, Shara Ball, Danny (Sanaz) Ball, and great grandchildren Aspynn, Oakleigh, Willow, Easton, Henry, Audrey, and Nadia. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and their families.
Weston worked for the United States Postal Service, first as a Mail Carrier and then as a Payroll Specialist, immediately following his Army service and retired after 32 years. He also dabbled in bricklaying when he was younger and ran a firewood business out of his home in Edgewater after he retired. His interests included growing roses, traveling, camping, and was a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast. He loved sports and attended basketball and golf tournaments. His interest in golf started when he was young, and he enjoyed many days playing golf with family and friends, most especially in Myrtle Beach where he moved after retirement. He shared his love for golf far and wide, and encouraged many others to take up the sport, including his children and grandchildren and their spouses, and many of their friends. When he got his one and only hole-in-one some of his children and grandchildren were present to witness it.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date for the celebration of Buzz's life.
Weston was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
