William Travis Upperman July 25, 1943 - October 30, 2024
Our hearts are heavy with sadness at the sudden passing of William Travis Upperman (Bill) on Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia. A kind, gentle and honest soul, he was the beloved husband of Eileen Upperman (Shourds) for sixty years; the devoted father of Carol Kocot and her husband Larry, Travis Upperman and his wife Melissa (Cole), and Jillain Pommett and her husband Frank; and the much-loved Grandaddy of Kaily, Kristy and Tommy Kocot; Amanda, Malorie, Summer and William Upperman, and Vera, Ella, Frankie, and Holly Pommett.
Bill was always willing to share his time, skills, and friendship with his neighbors on Tonga Drive and surrounding Fort Washington from the late 60s until a recent move to Glen Arm. A well-respected member of the business community, he continued the family business, R. V. Upperman Sons, Inc. in Temple Hills until his retirement in 2013. He worshiped for over 50 years at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Piscataway, and was a dedicated member of the South Gate-Clinton Lions Club for 30 years where he also served as president. For over 40 years, he served as an active member of the Shannon Park Association in Kinsale, Virginia where he loved boating, fishing and water skiing on the creeks of the Northern Neck and spending time with his treasured family and friends at the “Rivah”. Bill was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins and enjoyed attending games for many years with his brother Mike.
He also leaves his sisters, Karen Upperman Yates and her husband, Bill, and Mary Lynn Hartzell and her husband, Warren; his brother, George Upperman and his wife, Suzanne; and many nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in peace by his mother and father, Virginia and Reginald Upperman, his mother- and father-in-law, Veronica and Robert Shourds, his brother, R. Vincent Upperman, Jr., and his brother and best friend, Michael Upperman.
Bill leaves a legacy of strong family values and a deep love of his religion. He will be very much missed and always remembered.
We would be remiss by not mentioning all the Boxer dogs of his own and his extended family that were blessed with his love and affection…Chopper, Rocky, Barney, Sailor, Skipper, Bonnie, Casper, Tiger, Schnitzel, Butch x2, Brutus, Sonny, Bruno, Max, Boz, Mosby, Petey, Prissy, Rudy, Scooby, Tigger, Brody, Bear, Winnie, Bennie, Ricky, Rosie and Arnie (of unknown breed), and many more.
